A self-graded progress report on my goals might be in order today:
Blogging regularly – B
Exercising 3 times a week – B+
Organizing my basement office – C
Fasting once a week – D-
Not as stellar a report card as I would like but it’s a work in progress. This is my tenth blog post and I certainly am finding it easier to be obedient to God’s call in this area now that I’ve started. I actually got a comment too. Someone is reading it!
The nice weather has encouraged Nancy and me to take some long walks together. That is both enjoyable and helping me to meet my exercise goals. So is the gardening.
I made some good progress on the basement last week and I have a goal to go through all the paper and books in question this week. If I can get that NHI (that’s public school speak for work “not handed in”) taken care of my basement grade will go up a good deal.
One false start on the fasting is going to cut it. That will change.
Remember that these things are not merely good things to do. For me, they are things that I believe God is calling me to do so it is now a part of my walk of obedience to God. That fact changes things. We can chafe under legalism if we believe that our walk with Christ is about obeying rules of exercise, fasting, and other duties. But when the Lord calls us to walk in certain areas of behavioral obedience, the equation is different. He gives grace and enabling power to that which calls us to do (think of Peter walking on water). Also, obedience is the pathway to experience God’s life in us to the fullest extent.
